Effective communication (part II)

The all time favorite post on my Blog is “Basics of effective communication“. I believe what was said back then still applies. Here are a couple more ideas for you to keep in mind before engaging others, either they are costumers or members of your own team:”First things first”: What is your objective? What is the key message you want to transmit?

  • Think of your audience, their expectations, their previous knowledge about the subject, their education background, their business culture etc. Write/speak accordingly. First impression counts if you dont know the people and don´t skip many logical steps just to sound smart!
  • If your changing processes internally, use more than one channel of communication. It helps to pass the message across and useful to get people used to the idea you are trying to implement
  • To get the message across one must use the right channels, “eg if the staff you are contacting do not have regular access to a computer, do not rely on email as a way of communicating with them. Also consider that different categories of staff prefer to receive information in different ways“.
  • A  very common mistake is: the use acronyms without explaining them. Be mindful that not everyone might know what those are.
  • Use headlines that explain briefly and accurately what the message is about. Sometimes people don´t have time to read everything at once but it is important that they know what is it about.
  • Conduct an internal communications audit after the changes have been communicated for a while. Did people got the message? What can be improved? Use your findings to improve the process
  • Remember that good communication is a two-way process. Provide opportunities for others to communicate their views/thoughts.  LISTEN… (I’ll make sure I write a post with my thoughts on effective listening)

Being Googley :)

People often ask me: What is being Googley? Only Google employees are Googley?

In my opinion the first and important statement is:

Being Googley doesn’t necessarily mean working for Google. Being Googley is a concept.. A way of life.

It is true that it started with the the Google Culture, but I believe that it goes far beyond that. Is something that you can take home.

Part of being Googley is reflected in this sentence in the Google book `do well by doing good’. It applies while you are working but also on your personal life. It is about being friendly towards others, it is about tolerance towards different cultures and points of view. Acting Googley is doing something positive and meaningful, is going the ‘extra mile’ to improve how things work. It can be a process or a workflow or even contributing for the life of someone that lives far away and you never saw before.

Aiming for average, a passive attitude towards problems or giving up on a difficult situation is not Googley. A positive and constructive attitude will do you much better and help the world to become a better place for us all.

It is true that sometimes is not easy to overcome problems but being creative and responsible is part of being Googley.

“Googley”… “googliness” is aiming for a better life, aiming to make things easier and better for everyone, including yourself!

I do believe that it could change the world and it is a concept that each person has the right to describe and act and develop according to their beliefs and possibilities…

Edit (one more sentence): – As a company, “to fully understand Google, it’s helpful to understand all the ways in which the company has helped to redefine how individuals, businesses and technologists view the Internet”. Here is the Google Philosophy.

Basics of “Effective Communication”

Yes… communication, communication, communication. Every Marketing/Product or People’s Manager will tell you that this is the key to success and who am I to tell you otherwise! It is true! The way you communicate helps other people to form an opinion about you, about your ideas or about a product that you want to sell or buy. It doesn’t matter much if you have great ideas and you can’t transmit them in a effective way. Communication is a two-way process (speaking and listening) and you can’t be an effective communicator if you don’t master both. I came across a website that gives you some tips about communication strategies. Here are my own:

  • Start by always mention the points in common and accept different opinions by others
  • Nonverbal communication. What you do and how you do it is as important as your words.
  • Transmit something that others can find useful. Find what they need and work on it!
  • Be confident when you speak, being thoughtful but not emotional
  • Keep different opinions out of the personal level. “Attack” divergent opinions, not the one that represents it
  • Have a logical and organized presentation and avoid mixing concepts or ideas. Try to be clear and effective

Comunication Skills

“Remember the five “C’s” of communication – Clarity, Completeness, Conciseness, Concreteness and Correctness.”

This is, in my opinion, one of the best skills a person can have and I have to be honest, “easier said than done”. This is my own personal battle and an ongoing area for development.

EDIT: I have a couple more tips here. Thanks!
